The President of the European People's Party, Manfred Weber, feels privileged to be featured in the Hungarian government's billboard campaign, Euronews reports.
The Hungarian government's latest billboard campaign is urging people to cast their vote in the national consultation on Ukraine's request for EU accession. The campaign's slogan is "Let's not allow them to decide for us" and the billboards show Weber alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, Weber said that having their faces on the billboards was a sign that they were doing a good job. "It is a kind of a privilege in the meanwhile to be one of the main points of attack of the propaganda of Viktor Orbán. We have seen this happening since months and years. It still confirms what we stand for as the European People's Party. We are the party of Europe, we are the party of the rule of law, and we are the party of Ukraine's support," he added.
The European Commission has not commented on the poster campaign, arguing that this type of polling is a national competence and that Ukraine's accession to the EU remains a priority.
The billboard campaign was also mentioned at Thursday's government briefing in Budapest. Minister of the Prime Minister's Office Gergely Gulyás said that the Hungarian government continues to oppose Ukraine's EU membership. The mailing of the ballot papers for the opinion poll on this issue will begin next week. The only question in it will be: "Do you support Ukraine's membership of the European Union?" He reiterated the government's previously stated position that Ukraine's accession would be dangerous, including from an agricultural and economic point of view. "It is important for Hungary's voice to be heard on this issue," he said.
