Orbán to Zelensky: Hungarians do not want to die for Ukraine

“We don't want our children to come back from the front in coffins, and we don't want Hungarians' money to go to Ukraine,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote in response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's interview with Válasz Online. Orbán claims that Zelensky has lashed out at Hungary because “Hungarians don't want to die for Ukraine.”

“Unfortunately, Viktor's policy is anti-Ukrainian. And anti-European. He is using this in his domestic politics: he wants to use the war in Ukraine to his own advantage in the elections. This is dishonourable", the Ukrainian president told the portal. According to Zelensky, Orbán is using Ukraine for his own re-election and as a favour to Putin, which he called a “serious, historic mistake.”

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó also responded to the interview. He said that Kyiv was conducting “anti-Hungarian propaganda” because “Hungary is on the side of peace, Hungary is not supplying weapons to Ukraine, and we are not sending the Hungarian people's money to Ukraine.” He added that “the Ukrainian president is interested in creating a puppet government in Hungary that would send Hungarian people's money to Ukraine.”
