Viktor Orbán: The violation of Poland's territorial integrity is unacceptable
According to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the violation of Poland's territorial integrity is unacceptable. "Hungary stands in full solidarity with Poland with regard to the drone incident that took place last night," he wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday morning.
Orbán said that this incident demonstrates that the Hungarian government's policy of advocating for peace is justified and reasonable. "Living in the shadow of war carries with it risks and dangers. It is time to put an end to this! That is why we support President Trump's efforts towards peace," he wrote.
Russian drones had violated Polish airspace on Tuesday night and were shot down by the Polish air defense. At a press conference on Wednesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that there were at least 19 drone incursions into Polish airspace overnight.
Tusk held an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning, after which he announced that this was the first time a Russian drone had been shot down in the airspace of a NATO member state. Tusk described the incursion of the drones as a major provocation, and added that they had notified NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about the situation and the measures that had been taken.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, who is currently in Belarus, wrote on his Facebook page that if ever there was a time for dialogue, it was now. "There is a growing risk of the war escalating, so now is the time to think and act with a clear head and common sense! Europe needs peace, and this is what we have been standing for everywhere!"
In a video shared on his social media page, Tamás Menczer, Fidesz's communications director said that one of the lessons to be learned from the incident is that it is important to remain calm, and another is that "Viktor Orbán and the government were right." "This war must be brought to an end, this war must be finished. We are right here next door, not hundreds or thousands of kilometers away. We know full well that a misunderstanding or a wrong decision can carry enormous risks," he said.
