
To mark the 120th anniversary of Victor Vasarely's birth and the 50th anniversary of the opening of the local museum that exhibits his works, multiple events will be organized in Pécs throughout 2026. "This double anniversary is an exceptional opportunity for Pécs to gain international attention as a city of modern art, innovation, and visual thinking," Attila Péterffy, the city's mayor wrote in a press release sent to MTI.
In January 2026, a temporary thematic Vasarely exhibition will open at the Modern Hungarian Gallery, wihile on April 9, the artist's birthday, the renovated Vasarely Museum will reopen. There will be workshops and courses throughout May, and on May 14, a temporary exhibition of Claire Vasarely's works will open at the Museum Gallery.
From the end of May to mid-October, contemporary works of art reflecting on op art will be on display in Pécs under the title Vasarely 120. In June, the Vasarely Museum will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and between the end of June and the end of August, there will be presentations of light art entitled Vasarely Light.
Between July 2 and 5, at the tenth Zsolnay Festival of Light, installations inspired by Vasarely's oeuvre will be on display, while in mid-October, the early works of the artist will be exhibited at the Museum Gallery in Pécs, and the Csontváry Museum will host an hommage exhibition of Vasarely tapestry.
The Vasarely memorial year is being organized under the professional leadership of the Janus Pannonius Museum, with the involvement of the University of Pécs, the city's cultural institutions, and the local creative industry, in cooperation with the municipality of Pécs.
