Szijjártó makes it clear to ambassadors of EU member states what their job is and what it isn't
"Today, I will make it clear to the ambassadors of the European Union countries in Budapest what they should and should not do," said Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in a video posted on Friday ahead of his meeting with EU ambassadors. Szijjártó said he would inform EU ambassadors that if they become "wiseacres" during the Hungarian elections, they will “have a very, very difficult time in Budapest in the future.”
The minister later posted photos of himself sitting at the table, and wrote: "There is a lot of preparation in Brussels ahead of the Hungarian elections," and then continued with a series of the government's usual talking points about war, migration, gender, and the puppet government Brussels would like to see in Hungary.
According to Szijjártó, it was important to convene all EU member states' ambassadors in Budapest to let them know that "an ambassador serving in our country has no business interjecting anything concerning the Hungarian elections. We will not accept any criticism or commentary about the April vote."
Before the meeting, Szijjártó also said that, in his opinion, it was clear that "due to the expected defeat of the Tisza Party, efforts to erode public confidence in the electoral system have already begun, with some already talking about manipulation and seeking to discredit and criticize our electoral system," according to MTI.
"I will make it clear to the ambassadors that if they turn into wiseacres, comment on, or criticize the Hungarian electoral process in the coming period, they will have a very, very difficult time doing their jobs in Budapest in the future. One thing is certain: they will not be able to meet with any senior government officials, and they will not be able to gain access to anyone above the level of deputy department head," Szijjártó said.
