Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó welcomed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Budapest on Monday morning. In a post about the meeting, the minister said: "With US support, we will maintain the reductions in utility costs."

Rubio arrived in Budapest on Sunday evening, where he was welcomed at the airport by Levente Magyar, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. "Twice in Washington, and now for the first time in Budapest: this is a new, golden age in Hungarian-American relations," Szijjártó wrote in his social media post on Monday and announced that the two governments will sign an important agreement on nuclear cooperation, according to MTI.

Szijjártó stated on Sunday that Europeans are constantly trying to undermine US President Donald Trump's efforts to promote peace, but Hungary is working for peace, which will also be a topic of discussion during his talks with Rubio. Another main topic of the talks will be Hungarian-American relations.

Prior to arriving in Budapest, the US Secretary of State was in Bratislava on Sunday, where he expressed concern about the recently published report in which five European countries claimed that the Russian opposition activist, Alexei Navalny, had died of poisoning. Before that, he spoke at the Munich Security Conference, saying, among other things, that the United States shares a history with Europe, which is why it is important to maintain a close transatlantic alliance.
