Orbán invited to Trump's Board of Peace for Gaza

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has received an invitation from US President Donald Trump to sit on the Board of Peace for Gaza, Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó announced. The minister was speaking on a TV programme, where he also addressed the situation in Ukraine, the EU and the threat of war on the continent.
A few days prior he had gathered EU member states' ambassadors to Hungary to tell them that anyone who interferes in the upcoming election campaign will have a very difficult time in their work here, because "they will not be able to meet with any senior government officials, and they will not be granted access to anyone above the level of deputy department head ".

Orbán commented on X, writing that: “We have, of course, accepted this honourable invitation" and Szijjártó also confirmed that they will participate in the work. The Foreign Minister stressed that they greatly appreciate Donald Trump's "peace efforts," but did not comment on the issue of Greenland, which is currently another hot topic related to Trump.

Being invited is one thing, but according to the Times of Israel, which cited the council's founding document, Donald Trump would ask each nation participating in it for three years for a $1 billion contribution.

The body created by Trump will oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. According to CNN, the body will play an important role in implementing the UN-backed US plan for the demilitarization and reconstruction of the area, which has suffered years of bombing. Trump has previously indicated that, with the support of Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar, they will ensure that a comprehensive demilitarization agreement is reached with Hamas, which would include the surrender of all weapons belonging to the Islamist organization and the destruction of all its tunnels.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, is unhappy because they were left out of the negotiations on the composition of the executive committee of the Gaza Board of Peace, a body consisting of state leaders. "This goes against our policies, the Israeli government said. The body includes Turkey and Qatar, which have consistently condemned Israel's war on Gaza, as well as the United Arab Emirates, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Jared Kushner, the US president's son-in-law. The body also includes the UN's former humanitarian coordinator and the UN's former special envoy to the Middle East.
