Nearly 130,000 Hungarians employed in Austria last year

According to a summary by Privátbankár, the number of Hungarians working in Austria reached a ten-year high last year. Based on data from the relevant Austrian ministry, the paper calculated that in 2025, an average of more than 129,000 Hungarians were employed in the country, meaning that

the annual average had risen by 66.7 percent in 10 years.

Excluding the Covid years, the number has gradually and steadily grown over the past ten years by approximately 5,000 to 10,000 people, breaking the previous record every year.

In December, German workers were the only ones to outnumber the 131,081 Hungarians employed in the neighbouring country, with a total of 139,080. Romania came in third, but lagged far behind with 74,400 of its citizens working in Austria.

If we take into account not only full time employment but other legal statuses (freelancers, part-time workers) as well, we get an even higher number for Hungarians in the last month of 2025: calculating with all forms of employment, the number of Hungarians working in Austria approached 150,000.
